Your home is likely the single largest investment you will ever make. With this thought in mind, it’s a good idea to put preventative home maintenance at the top of your to-do list. Taking the time to prepare for colder weather will save you money and headaches in the future.
We have put together eight fall maintenance tips from the National Association of Realtors to remind you of some of the important ways you can protect your home.
- Protect your pipes from damage by turning off outdoor water and winterizing your irrigation system, if you have one.
- Clean your gutters to prevent leaks, flooding issues, and ice jams. Examine your downspouts to make sure they are moving water away from your home to prevent foundation problems.
- Get your furnace serviced to avoid being surprised by major heating issues this winter.
- Protect against potential fire by running your mower dry before stowing the mower in your garage or shed.
- Have your fireplace and chimney checked for built-up soot and solidified creosote that will eventually clog the interior of your flue or chimney, creating a serious fire hazard.
- Seal cracks around doors and windows to protect your home from moisture damage and heat loss during cold weather.
- Prune trees and shrubs away from your home to protect against structural damage and to keep rodents and bugs from nesting in the eaves.
- Visually inspect your roof and make arrangements to replace any loose, damaged, or missing shingles
